Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga works on structural alignment of the body through the practice of asanas or poses. Physical alignment leads to inner calm, poise, and equilibrium. Over time, students develop strength as well as flexibility. Everyone has a different amount of flexibility and stamina, so Iyengar teachers make use of props like blocks, blankets, and belts as aids, so that a student can be in alignment no matter their level of proficiency. This way of working was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, who was one of the major teachers to spread the practice of yoga throughout the world.

Our teachers use clear demonstrations, exact language, and physical adjustments that allow students to come into an asana, hold the asana, and come out of the asana with control.

Becoming a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher requires extensive training. To pass the certification requirement, each candidate must pass a written exam, exhibit proficiency in their own poses, and demonstrate their teaching skills before a panel of assessors, who are upper level Iyengar teachers. Teachers must continue their studies every year, in order to renew their certification. Julia has helped mentor 3 students who have become certified Iyengar teachers.
